Area: 13 km²
Population: 66,411
Capital: Melilla
The mixture of the centuries-old walls of Melilla’s citadel and the Art Nouveau
architecture of its boulevards is a clear example of the variety that is the
predominant note in this city, situated on the northern coast of Africa.
A mixture that can also be seen in its cuisine, ranging from tapas washed down
with cold beer to Arab dishes, as well as the typical pincho melillense (served
with mint tea).
Another attraction of Melilla is its shopping district, akin to an African
bazaar where, as in Ceuta, prices tend to be lower than on the mainland,
because many products are tax free. Santiago Chapel is a must for those
who want to photograph the only Gothic-style building on the entire continent
of Africa.
